The gorilla kept me up all night

Thanks to the MacBreak Weekly podcast, I discovered a new program called Dream Recorder which, according to their Website, “measures your sleep states by detecting your motions all along the night using [an] enhanced night vision mode for iSight cameras.”

Some of the program’s other features include a snore detector and “dream recorder.”

Using the Mac’s built-in microphone, the program can actually recognize when you’re snoring and alert you via a subtle whistling sound. I’m not sure why you’d want to be alerted when you’re snoring, or if a hard sleeper like me would even be able to hear the whistle alert, but still, it’s a pretty interesting little feature. In addition to sensing when you snore, the program also senses when you’re dreaming using motion detection. Your movement is then recorded on a timeline.

But the coolest feature is the video Dream Recorder pieces together using the snapshots that it takes.

When you awake in the morning, a sweet little report awaits you with that night’s activity. According to my report, I must have been dreaming between 3:30 and 4:30 AM.

Night ProfileWhat would really be cool is if the program were able to automatically record any sounds that you make during the night. For example, many people talk in their sleep without ever realizing it. Wouldn’t it be cool if our babble were recorded?

Pretty sweet stuff.

Side note: If you look closely at the video, you’ll be able to see the stuffed gorilla James got me for last Valentine’s day.
